C.S.S. COTTON Ship Porthole
History of the CSS Cotton: The ship was a 229ft sidewheel steamer named the J.A. Cotton. Purchased by the Confederate Government in 1862. Named the CSS Cotton the ship was partially clad w/ iron and used as a rebel gunboat. Had 4 guns (32-smooth) casemated. Converted into ironclad (probably partially) at Berwick Bay, Louisiana. Captained by Edward W. Fuller the CSS Cotton was considered the most serious threat to Union activities the CSA had in the region. Engaged at Berwick Bay in a close spirited action against heavy odds. Captain Fuller caused considerable damage to the Union squadron until exhaustion of ammunition forced the Cotton to retire. Captain Fuller reported that the legs of his men's pants were cut off for use as improvised cartridge bags to fire parting shots as he withdrew. Involved in the Battle of Cornay Bridge/Battle of Bayou Teche and was set on fire/abandoned/destroyed by the crew at Bayou Teche. The boat was still complete and used as obstruction by the Confederates. The 42nd Massachusetts Infantry was sent into area April 15nth-23rd to clear Bayou Teche obstructions. Then there is a drawing of the CSS Cotton on 9.26.1863 (Wreck of the Confederate Gunboat Cotton , (BING)) where the author states that the Corps of Engineers have arrived to remove it. Probably sold as scrap or taken as relic. This is a great Confederate piece of history.
Added an additional picture fron the Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia VOL.III by Francis A. Lord. Page 156 has the this information about the porthole. This is the only documentation about this piece and a note about the recovery site.
